These are my 1998 Movie Ratings...
Best Movie of the Year. 1
Great! Go see it. 6
Pretty Good. 5
Average. 14
Bad! Don't bother. 6

1998 (32)

Alphabetical Order
Rating Title Description
Armageddon Bruce Willis and his oil guys go comet drilling in two Space Shuttles to save the Earth. Very patriotic. Better than Deep Impact. Aerosmith provides the tunes.
The Avengers The Avengers are facing an opponent who's in the extremely bad weather business (Sean Connery). Good special effects, but it was boring!
Blade Fast action Wesley Snipes vampire movie with lots of blood, bullets, swords and ghoulish goings on. I have a feeling there's a sequel in our future.
A Bugs Life Flik the Ant versus the Hoppers who are stealing their food. Computer animation that rivals some of the best hand-drawn animated movies. I really liked the rainstorm/chase scene near the end.
Contact Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) on a trip through time and space. Tom Skerritt tries to hog the glory but gets blown up for his efforts.
Deep Impact First of 1998 asteroid films, kind of sad themes, nice asteroid impact scene and good scenes of people literally heading for the hills.
Deep Rising Sea creature (squidish) invades a cargo ship in the middle of the Pacific.
Enemy Of The State Will Smith buddies up with a former NSA agent (Gene Hackman) to escape from a team of government spooks intent on covering up a murder of a Congressman. They can see you from space. Lots of action !
Firestorm A prison break during a forest fire keeps Howie Long busy. Hint: Find a rowboat in a lake.
Godzilla Good special effects, but the lizard has no personality. A disappointment. Lotsa lizard babies lived through it, but I don't think there'll be a sequel.
A Hard Rain Morgan Freeman is the baddie in an armoured van holdup during a flood. Gets the award for the most soggy flick I've seen in quite some time.
Knock Off Claude Van Damme. Extreme action but zero plot left me sleeping.
Lost In Space The Jupiter II leaves earth and gets time warped. A bit too much Fantasy (Dr. Smith as an evil black creature) and not enough real SciFi for my taste.
The Mask of Zorro Original Zorro (Anthony Hopkins) teaches the new Zorro (Antonio Banderas) his tricks to save California from the despotic Spanish authorities. Lots of good swordplay.
Mercury Rising Alec Baldwin as a bad government agent trying to kill an autistic genius boy who cracks an "uncrackable" code.
The Negotiator A Chicago cop negotiator is set up by his peers and relies on another negotiator to help untangle the whole mess and figure out what's going on. P.S. - you can't destroy data on a computer just by shooting it.
Palmetto Woody Harrelson is a down and out guy in Florida who takes a job to pretend to kill a girl, but it gets worse and worse for him.
A Perfect Murder Bad boy millionaire Michael Douglas plans to murder his wife, but it goes bad for him.
The Replacement Killers A hired killer is paid to kill a cops son, but gets a soft heart and so the hoods go after him instead.
Ronin Robert De Niro teams up with the French guy from Godzilla as a "former" CIA operative working to steal a briefcase with something important inside (we never find out what it is). Katerina Witt cameos as a Russian ice skater.
Rounders A 90's update of the Cincinnati Kid where a preppie card shark takes on other sharpies and the Russian Mafia (Teddie KBG). Interesting characters, but no knives or guns, just fists. Poker scenes are good if you've played some.
Rush Hour Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker team up to track down the kidnappers of a 10 year old girl who's rigged to explode. Jackie plays it pretty straight as a Hong Kong policeman and Chris is the comical LAPD officer who can't keep a partner.
Saving Private Ryan Super realistic D-Day effects and Tom Hanks finds his man. I really liked it. The best film of 1998.
The Siege Terrorists start blowing up things all over New York City and the President calls in the US Army (starring General Bruce Willis). FBI agent Denzel Washington and CIA agent Annette Bening butt heads for most of the movie.
Soldier Kurt Russell is looking mighty good and speaking very little as Sergeant Todd/O-Pos/3465 who's intent on saving a small band of family fugitives from getting trashed by 20 super-soliders and their nefarious commander in 2036.
Species II The deranged alien/human species is loose again, but the original was much better.
Sphere Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone find a submerged alien craft that gets into their minds. A bit of a disappointment considering the skill of the actors.
Star Trek: Insurrection A light romp with the Next Generation crew resolving an alien dispute. Starts strong, then feels like an extended TV episode with better special effects. Just fine for Trekkies, although probably not enough intense action for others.
There's Something About Mary Adolescent comedy about a guy with a crush on a young blond doctor, but he's competing with 4 other guys. Rates pretty high on the potty humor scale.
The Truman Show Jim Carrey is actually pretty good as a kid growing up and escaping from an Earthlike bubble built for the amusement of the public.
U.S. Marshals Tommy Lee Jones goes for his second fugitive, this one is a former Navy Seal (Wesley Snipes) who was set up and escapes from a plane crash.
The X Files The extraterrestrials are plotting to overthrow the Earth, but Scully and Muldaur thrwart them (for now). Look out for suspicious corn fields and bees.
